Edger Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is best remembered as the creator of the world-famous character of Tarzan, one of the icons of today's culture. Ex-confederate army captain John Carter finds himself unwittingly transported to Mars, while fleeing Apache Indians. A Princess of Mars is the first of 11 in Burroughs' famous Barsoom series. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his famous Tarzan series. He wrote it between July and September 28, 1911.
